NEPRA Power Purchase Price Reduction: In an important meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, it was decided to carry out large-scale reforms in the electricity system across the country, with the aim of making it possible for consumers to have affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply. The meeting reviewed the progress of revolutionary measures taken by NEPRA such as reducing the purchase price of electricity, installing smart meters across the country, auctioning harmful power plants (GENCOs), and setting up electric vehicle charging stations. The meeting was informed that in the first phase, an income of Rs 9.05 billion has been generated from the auction of GENCOs, while successful negotiations with 36 IPPs have resulted in a saving of Rs 3.69 trillion to the national exchequer. Electricity bills will be reduced, solar tube wells have been installed in rural areas, and accurate and transparent billing will be possible with the help of smart meters. Additionally, the government is also introducing a soft loan scheme for energy-saving fans, which will be a means of reducing electricity bills for the middle class. In a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government reviewed progress on ongoing electricity sector reforms and emphasized that relief to common citizens and uninterrupted power supply to industries are top national priorities. The meeting also highlighted Pakistan’s EV charging network expansion. An online portal has been launched for receiving applications, and already 120 applications have been submitted. Out of these, 48 applicants have been granted interim registration certificates. Additionally, regularization of existing charging stations is completed to support Pakistan’s green transportation ambitions.

Meanwhile, NTDC has been dissolved, and its responsibilities are now being handed over to two new institutions: the Energy Infrastructure Development Company and the National Grid Company, both of which will ensure smoother and more modern transmission operations.

Making Electricity Affordable for the Middle Class

A practical plan is also in the works to introduce energy-efficient ceiling fans. The government will provide bank loans on easy terms to help middle-class households buy these fans and lower their monthly electricity bills. Furthermore, energy-efficient building designs are being developed in consultation with provincial governments to promote sustainable urban development.

The Prime Minister was also briefed on the financing interest shown by both local and international institutions for transmission line projects in Matiari, Moro, Rahim Yar Khan, Faisalabad, and Ghazi Barotha.
